Mister Cardinal enjoys throwing darts and slurping craft brews at his favorite
watering hole--The Cardinal Bar on 38th Street. The trickiest part of capturing
his essence was trying to get him to stay still long enough for me to draw a
cartoon of his savoir faire. He was on his way to Matt Bristol's Bar & Grill on
35th Street when I spied him sitting on a branch with surreal elm shaped
leaves--one of the new fangled elms on the boulevard.
The sun catcher is made with a combination of glass: mouth blown antique
(orange and red), drawn antique (red), water glass (red) and reclaimed beer
bottle glass (green) from ports unknown. Copper foiled and soldered with lead
free solder with a copper rod armature with aforementioned 3D
leaves--wheeeeeeeeee!
I enjoy a natural patina as metals begin to oxidize in the scheme of
things...silver solder lines and copper rods for leaf stems develop a lovely
patina over time. In light, the pieces will present a dark solder line (I don't
apply acid to the metals unless requested...an additional $25 will be required
for that process) and copper stems will appear dark with natural light. At
night, the ambient light from indoors will give a different view, reflecting
off the various metals.
